BYU Women’s Volleyball 2021 Schedule Features Five In-State Opponents

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s volleyball returns to its normal fall schedule for the upcoming season. Last year, BYU and the WCC played in the spring in primarily a conference-only schedule. Non-conference games are back on the schedule for the 2021 season.

BYU opens up the 2021 season on August 27 at Smith Fieldhouse against in-state foe Southern Utah in the doTERRA Classic. The Cougars meeting with SUU is one of five matchups against in-state programs on the non-conference schedule.

Other matches with in-state schools include Weber State (Sept. 2, BYU Invitational), Dixie State (Sept. 3, BYU Invitational), Utah (Sept. 16), and at Utah Valley (Sept. 18).

Last season, BYU finished 17-2, earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the Sweet 16 before falling to No. 1 seed Wisconsin.

BYU head coach Heather Olmstead enters her seventh season leading the program, and she has yet another talented roster. Olmstead’s 2021 squad is headlined by five All-Americans, including three returnees from last year’s team in Taylen Ballard-Nixon, Whitney Bower, and Kennedy Eschenberg. In addition, middle blocker Heather Gneiting returns after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Seattle. Washington.

BYU also added Utah transfer and All-American Kenzie Koerber.

Aside from the in-state matchups, BYU has a pair of matches against Power 5 conference programs. Michigan State will participate in the BYU Invitational in Provo and face BYU on Sept. 4. The Spartans were 3-12 in their Big Ten only schedule last spring.

Then BYU travels cross country to take on the Pitt Panthers. Pitt was a Cinderella story in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Elite 8 as an unseeded team. BYU takes on Pitt on Sept. 10. Pitt is one of 10 teams on BYU’s 2021 schedule that participated in the NCAA Tournament this past spring.
