Baltimore Columnist: Ravens’ QB2 Role Is Tyler Huntley’s ‘Job To Lose’

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Mike Preston of The Baltimore Sun wrote that the backup quarterback position with the Baltimore Ravens is former Utah QB Tyler Huntley’s “job to lose.”

On Friday, July 2, the columnist wrote that Huntley’s battle with Trace McSorely for QB2 “might not be much of a contest.”

“Based off Organized Team Activities and three days of mandatory mini-camp practices, Huntley clearly distanced himself from McSorley as the No. 2 behind starter Lamar Jackson, who was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2019,” Preston wrote.

After spending much of his rookie season on Baltimore’s practice squad, Huntley was elevated to the active roster and saw playing time late in the 2020 season, including the entire fourth quarter of the Ravens’ playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.

That experience propelled the former Ute into the offseason, where’s taken leaps in his game.

“Huntley’s body language was different compared to a year ago. He had a swag. There were times when he threw some passes in tiny holes with such velocity that even reporters bristled. When he threw sidelines passes, they were high and tight where only his receivers could make the catch,” Preston continued. “Truth be told, his arm strength and touch on the long ball were better than Jackson’s. And there were times when Huntley got outside the pocket and started that mad sprint down the sideline where it was hard to recognize if it was Huntley or Jackson because both wore their jersey’s inside out.”

The Ravens begin their preseason in August and Huntley will have the chance to solidify QB2 status behind Jackson.

“In this age of mobile quarterbacks, the Ravens got another model in Huntley,” Preston wrote. “His skill set is similar to Jackson’s, which makes him an ideal fit for this offense.”

Huntley and the Ravens begin their 2021 regular season against the Las Vegas Raiders on September 13.
