PROVO, Utah – It’s not everyday BYU football gets a five-star recruit to visit their campus, let alone participate in a summer camp.
This week, BYU has one of the nation’s top recruits in the class of 2023 on-campus in cornerback Cormani McClain.

Cormani McClain hails from Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland, Florida. At 6-foot-1 1/2, 165-pounds, McClain already holds offers from Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Miami, and dozens of others. A five-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite rankings, before visiting BYU, McClain made a trip to UCF.
In-person recruiting began once again after a historic 15-month dead period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This week is the first football camp on BYU’s campus featuring high school prospects. It runs through June 9th. BYU will have another camp with high school athletes coming up next week.
BYU’s history with 5-star recruits
The last time BYU had a five-star recruit visit campus was Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris. Harris, who ended up signing with Alabama, made two trips to BYU. Once during the 2014 season and again after Kalani Sitake was hired in the winter of 2016.
Since 2000, BYU has landed only two five-star prospects in the star system era. Those recruits came during the Gary Crowton years in QB Ben Olsen in 2002 and OL Ofa Mohetau in 2003. Olsen never played a snap at BYU. Mohetau was enrolled at BYU for one injury-plagued year. Before that, former tight end/offensive lineman Brandon Stephens was a top-20 recruit nationally in the 1997 recruiting class.
