PROVO, Utah – While BYU basketball waits for official decisions from Matt Haarms and Alex Barcello, they officially know the future of Brandon Averette. Averette is moving on with his basketball career after BYU.

Averette is joining the Dallas Heat of the semi-pro Evolution Basketball Association. According to the Heat’s website, they have a partnership with the G-League’s Texas Legends.

With the NCAA allowing seniors to return for another year of eligibility due to the impact COVID-19 had on this past season, the opportunity was there for Averette to return to BYU for one more year.

Last week, Averette announced he was doing skills & training clinics for young basketball players looking to get better in his home state of Texas. So it’s not a surprise that Averette is moving on from BYU, but signing with a semi-pro league would make the transition after BYU official.

The Evolution Basketball Association is a new league. Their mission “is to enhance the knowledge, understanding, and business perspective of Minor League Basketball.”

Brandon Averette in one year at BYU

Averette played one season for BYU after stints with Oklahoma State and Utah Valley. In his lone season with the Cougars, Averette averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds per game.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound guard, had a knack for making shots when BYU needed a big play. Averette came up clutch in BYU’s road win at nationally-ranked San Diego State.

In Averette’s final 10 games of the 2020-21 season, he scored at least 10 points in each game, including a 15-point performance against UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis.

BYU closed out Averette’s one season with the Cougars at 20-7 overall, receiving a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
