SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – We have our first recruiting battle between BYU’s Mark Pope and new Utah head coach Craig Smith, and it’s taking place in the Transfer Portal.

Former Duke Blue Devils guard Jordan Goldwire reportedly has trimmed his list of 40-plus schools since he entered the portal in late March down to six. Both BYU and Utah make the cut, according to The Fayetteville Observer.

Goldwire’s other four reported programs in his top six include Oregon State, Wichita State, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma.

Jordan Goldwire profile

Originally from Norcross, Georgia, Goldwire is 6-foot-2 and earned All-ACC Defensive Team honors during the 2020-21 season. He started in 26 games the past two seasons for Mike Krzyzewski’s program.

Goldwire averaged 5.8 points, 2.3 steals, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game last year for Duke.

“Duke fans owe Jordan a tremendous amount of respect for being such a first-class player, leader, and teammate during his four years in our program,” said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski on Goldwire in March. “Jordan always embraced his role, and his improvement over the course of his career is a testament to his mentality and competitive spirit. He was outstanding to coach and we wish him all the best. It was an honor to have Jordan and his family as a part of Duke Basketball and we will miss them.”

Whichever school lands Goldwire, they will only have him for one year. Goldwire was a senior in 2021 for Duke, but due to the NCAA freezing everyone’s eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Goldwire has one more season left during his collegiate career.

How Goldwire fits with either BYU or Utah

BYU is looking to add personnel to their backcourt for next year. The Cougars lost out on former Wasatch Academy standout Mike Saunders who decided to stay put at the University of Cincinnati. Honorable Mention All-American Alex Barcello is still mulling over his options about potentially returning to BYU or moving on.

Utah has more options at guard, but Smith is looking to upgrade his roster to compete in a Pac-12 Conference that featured four teams in the Sweet 16 this past March.

Goldwire brings a wealth of his experience to whichever programs he signs with. He played in 116 games during his four years with the Blue Devils. In 2019-20, Goldwire was named Duke’s co-Defensive Player of the Year with current Spurs guard Tre Jones.
