INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – It has been 10 years since Jimmer Fredette and the BYU basketball program advanced to the Sweet 16. Time flies. That team led by Fredette also marks the last time BYU advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.

Will this year’s BYU team win at least one game? Or better yet, make a run to the second weekend and beyond?

Jimmer Fredette thinks so. He has the Cougars advancing to the Sweet 16 in his bracket. Fredette joined the Cougar Sports Saturday crew via Zoom to preview the Cougars chances in the Big Dance.

“I’ve got them winning the first two games,” said Fredette on KSL’s Cougar Sports Saturday. “I have them going to the Sweet 16. I think they have a legit chance to be able to do that. They’ve got a couple of tough opponents it looks like, but they’re a really good basketball team and you know, I’m hoping they can make a Sweet 16 run.”

There’s something special for BYU in years that end with the number one. In 2011, BYU advanced to the Sweet 16. Ten years before that, BYU won their last conference tournament title. Back in 1991, BYU advanced to the Round of 32, and in 1981 the Cougars played in the Elite 8.

Maybe Jimmer is onto something. He would know what a team that has the makings of a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. The road to the Sweet 16, or even the Final Four begins tonight as BYU takes on No. 11 seed UCLA at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 7:40 p.m. on CBS and will be heard here on KSL NewsRadio.

This is BYU’s first meeting against UCLA in the NCAA Tournament since 1981. It’s the 25th meeting all-time between the Cougars and Bruins with both schools winning 12 games apiece in the series.

If BYU gets by UCLA, the Cougars will face the winner of the (3) Texas/(14) Abilene Christian game in the second round of the tournament.
