SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Washington Football Team is expected to release quarterback Alex Smith in the coming days, according to the the NFL Network.

The Post reported that the Washington Football Team wants to revamp their roster and Alex Smith is not in the cards for the franchise.

Smith spent three seasons with Washington after being traded during the 2018 offseason from Kansas City. He missed the 2019 season after suffering a horrific leg injury on November 18, 2018. The former Utah signal caller made the remarkable comeback in 2020 and played 8 games with 6 starts, leading the Football Team to an NFC East division title. After the season, Smith earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported the news first and mentioned that Smith still wants to play in the NFL in 2021.

During his 18 games in a Washington uniform, Smith threw for 3,762 yards, 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. After a tremendous two seasons at quarterback for the University of Utah, Smith just completed his 16th season in the NFL.

Smith will be an attractive free agent for teams with young rosters or a young quarterback for him to mold. He has done that for three quarterbacks that have gone on to play in Super Bowls, including Colin Kaepernick, Nick Foles and Patrick Mahomes.
