Third Quarter Run Helps Utah Jazz Coast To Win Over Miami Heat

Feb 13, 2021, 9:21 PM | Updated: 10:13 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz used a 16-0 run at the start of the third quarter to propel themselves to victory over the Miami Heat.

The Jazz hosted the Heat at Vivint Arena on Saturday, February 13.

Utah held Miami scoreless during the opening six minutes of the second half.

The run helped the Jazz coast to their seventh straight win with a 112-94 victory over the Heat. Utah has won 18 of its last 19 contests, 16 of which have come by a least a 10-point margin.

Game Flow

The Jazz started the game slow. Really slow.

Utah only scored four points during the opening 6:45 of game time and trailed the Heat, 13-4.

Five points by an aggressive Bojan Bogdanovic got the Jazz back into the game and they trailed by only three points at the end of the first quarter.

Utah played much better in the second quarter and went to the halftime break with a 47-42 lead.

The first 6:09 of the third quarter is where the game essentially ended.

Donovan Mitchell took over to start the second half and went on a personal 8-0 run. Mitchell’s run was part of a 16-0 spurt by the Jazz.

Miami failed to score in the third quarter until the 5:51 mark, thanks for Jazz center Rudy Gobert and his lockdown defense.

The Heat outscored the Jazz by three points over the final 12 minutes of action but it wasn’t enough to overcome the double-digit deficit they found themselves in for most of the second half.

Team is Everything

Utah has won a bunch of games this season because of its impressive three-point shooting.

Tonight was a different story.

The Heat stuck to Jazz shooters and tried to prevent triples all game.

At the end of the first quarter, Utah was shooting 9.1 percent from beyond the arc. Although things improved from downtown, the Jazz finished the game only shooting 12-46 for 26.1 percent from distance.

Despite Miami taking away the deep ball, Utah found answers elsewhere.

The Jazz consistently attacked the rim and finished with 54 points in the paint compared to 40 points by the Heat.

Donovan Mitchell finished with a game-high 26 points on 9-21 shooting.

Bogdanovic was Utah’s second-leading scorer with 19 points.

Gobert posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. He also had three blocks.

Royce O’Neale scored only eight points but was dominant during his 32 minutes on the court. O’Neale hounded Miami’s stars with excellent defense and filled up the box score. The Jazz forward ended the contest with seven boards, four assists, three steals, and three blocks.

Miami was led by Kendrick Nunn’s 23 points.

Jimmy Butler had 15 points for the Heat.

Up Next

With the win, the Jazz improved their NBA-best record to 22-5 on the season, including 12-2 at home.

Utah’s next game is against the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia 76ers.

The Jazz will host the 76ers (18-9) on Monday, February 15 at 7 p.m. (MDT).
