SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah State and current Packers quarterback Jordan Love said that Green Bay’s plan for him is to develop and take over once Aaron Rodgers is done playing.

Love spoke about the quarterback situation in Green Bay during a recent interview with Fox Sports Radio’s Doug Gottlieb.

“That’s kind of what their plan is. I mean I’m here to develop and be the one to take over when he’s (Aaron Rodgers) out of here,” Love said. “I think that’s kind of their plan all along.”

Love also discussed his situation as the Packers’ backup QB with CBS Sports while working with Panini America to finish signing his 2020 rookie trading cards.

“The situation I’m in, they brought me in to learn as much as I can, and that’s really all I can do,” Love said. “I don’t make those calls; they do. Obviously, (like) anybody, you wanna be out there competing. The way I look at it, if I’m not ready to be out there, then I have to keep working. I mean, I definitely grew a lot during the season. It’s a lot when you first get there, your head’s kinda spinning, but once you get your feet into it and get through the season, your confidence gains.”

Aaron Rodgers

Following the Packers’ exit from the postseason in Green Bay’s NFC Championship loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rodgers made some vague remarks about what his future with the organization looked like.

“A lot of guys’ futures, they’re uncertain. Myself included,” Rodgers said.

On February 1, Green Bay’s general manager Brian Gutekunst tried to put to rest any rumors about Rodgers’ time with the Packers being over.

“I will say this: We’re really excited not only for next year but the years to come,” Gutekunst said. “He’s playing at such a high level that he always has, and I think this year was a special team. It didn’t finish like we wanted to finish, but I think everybody’s purely motivated to get back and I think, like I said, I don’t think there’s anything that we have to do. He’s our quarterback, and he’s our leader.”

When asked if Rodgers would be the Packers’ starting quarterback in 2021, head coach Matt Fleur echoed similar remarks to those made by Gutekunst.

“Is that a trick question?” LaFleur said. “Absolutely. There’s no doubt about it. You’re talking about the guy that’s going to win the MVP of the league. We’re not in this position without him. I couldn’t be happier with just not only his performance but how he led our football team, all the little things he does within that locker room to ensure that everybody is locked in, focused and ready to go. Absolutely he will be here for a long time. I know I’ve said that before, but a long time.”

According to Pro Football Talk, Rodgers is looking for a new contract from the Packers.

Jordan Love in 2020

Love was selected by the Packers during the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Green Bay traded up in the first round in order to pick the former Utah State signal-caller.

During the 2020 season, Love was repeatedly listed as inactive for Green Bay’s games as a healthy scratch.

“Everybody wants to play,” Love told Gottlieb. “For me, it’s just a driving force to try and get better any way I can.”

“Seeing Aaron and how he handles himself in practice. Being in a quarterback room, you kinda know how it goes, but he’s a really smart dude,” Love said to CBS Sports. “For him, obviously, it’s a little different, because I’m over here learning the playbook still, and he knows it.”

About Jordan Love

Prior to his time in the NFL, Love played for Utah State from 2016-19.

During his time with the Aggies, he threw for 8,600 yards, 60 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions with a completion rate of 61 percent.
