SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau has shot a three-under-par opening round to sit five shots behind Patrick Reed, who leads at eight-under-par, following the first round at The Farmers Insurance Open.
Finau began his opening round on the back-nine and began proceedings with a bogey on the par-four, 12th hole. However, he was able to recover with a birdie on the par-five, 18th to make the turn at even par.

A bogey on two had Finau in the positive again, but four birdies on holes four, six, eight, and nine brought Finau back into contention as his first round came to an end.
Finau played his first round on the south course of Torrey Pines. Tomorrow he will play the north course, his tee time is scheduled for 8:20 a.m.
Over the years, Finau has performed well at Torrey Pines. Last year, he finished in a tie for sixth place, five shots behind eventual champion Marc Leishman.
Tony Finau strokes gained ranks at Torrey Pines South, last 4 years (among 88 players with 6+ rounds):
Total – 5th

Finau made the most out of an average performance on Thursday. Finau only found the fairway on 46 percent of the time hitting 6 of a possible 13 fairways. His approach into greens was not stellar either as he hit 11 of 17 for 65 percent. Then, when he found the green he averaged 1.8 putts per green which ranks 85th in comparison to the rest of the field.
He will continue his quest for a second PGA Tour victory tomorrow morning alongside Pat Perez and Brandt Snedeker.
