Km SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah freshman running back Ty Jordan has passed away overnight in Texas, the Utes confirmed on Twitter.

Officials of the Denton County Police Department said a person that they have yet to identify was accidentally shot by a gun discharge Friday evening. He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

He was 19 years old.

Jordan’s passing comes following a remarkable season for the University of Utah. Jordan rushed for 597 yards and 6 touchdowns on 83 carries. He averaged 7.2 yards per carry. Despite his smaller frame, opposing defenders had no answer for the dynamic playmaker.

His burst of speed ultimately proved too much for opposing Pac-12 defenses to handle. He was explosive, intelligent and versatile.

Shortly after the season finale, Jordan was named as the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

His future on the field was bright, but it was his personality off the field that has touched so many of his peers and fans.

Earlier this year, Jordan’s mother Tiffany passed away after a long battle with lung and bone cancer. She was 43.

Jordan was from Mesquite, Texas, about 50 miles southeast of Denton.

Jordan was a highly touted recruit from West Mesquite High School. He was dubbed a four-star recruit by ESPN and had offers to play at USC, Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas before ultimately choosing to play at the University of Utah.

He is survived by his brother, Kobe.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with finances for the Jordan family. That page can be found, here.
