SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Heisman Trophy ceremony for the 2020 college football season will be a virtual event held on January 5th, 2021.

ESPN and The Heisman Trust revealed key dates for this year’s Heisman race during Saturday’s College GameDay broadcast. The move to a virtual ceremony means the Heisman Trophy will not be presented in New York City. It’s the first time that has happened since the Heisman was first presented in 1935.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Heisman Ceremony will originate from ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., studios for the first time. All Heisman finalists will appear via satellite from either their homes or schools. In addition, several Heisman Trophy winners will appear virtually during the one-hour event.

Heisman Trophy 2020 Key Dates

Originally, the Heisman Trophy ceremony was scheduled to take place on December 12th. That has become nearly impossible with teams scheduled to play games on that date and the following weekend. With the ceremony pushed back to January 5th, the voting deadline has been pushed back as well.

Heisman voters have until December 21st to submit their Heisman ballot. Voting will be based solely on on-field performance during the college football regular season through conference championship games.

The finalists for the 2020 Heisman Trophy will be revealed on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 during an ESPN broadcast at 5:30 p.m. (MT).

Players in the 2020 Heisman Race

A star-studded race is competing for the Heisman Trophy in 2020. Ohio State’s Justin Fields is viewed as a favorite with Alabama’s Mac Jones and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence not far behind. Locally, BYU star quarterback Zach Wilson is in the mix as well. KSL Sports launched a Heisman campaign for Wilson, prior to his dominant performance over nationally-ranked Boise State in a 51-17 victory.

Pro Football Focus currently ranks Justin Fields as the favorite with Jones, Wilson, and Lawrence behind the star Buckeye.
