SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In the latest episode of the Jazz Notes podcast, Ben Anderson breakdown the Utah Jazz additions of Dell Demps and Keyon Dooling to Quin Snyder’s bench. Then, Anderson examines two NBA draft prospects, Tyler Bey from Colorado and Tre Jones from Duke, before answering your mailbag questions.

You can listen to the entire podcast in the player below.

Demps and Dooling

In the podcast, Anderson broke down the additions of Demps and Dooling and how they signify a change to the Jazz approach to the roster. While Snyder had traditionally relied upon coaches with less NBA experience, shifting to two long time NBA veterans may signal a more mature approach to the game, and away from the developmental mindset of the roster.

You can read the entire article about Demps and Dooling here.

Demps was the general manager of the Austin Toros when Synder was the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs D-League affiliate from 2007-2010.  The Pelicans and Demps parted ways in February of 2019 after nine years with the organization amid the Anthony Davis saga that ultimately ended with the superstar forward being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Bey and Jones

Anderson continued his breakdown of NBA Draft options who should be available for the Jazz with the 23rd pick. In this episode, he looked more closely at Colorado forward Tyler Bey, and Duke guard Tre Jones. You can read both of those articles in the links below.

Tyler Bey

Tyler Bey is unquestionably one of the most exciting defensive prospects to watch in the 2020 draft. While not all good defenders are traditionally fun to watch, Bey bucks that trend with his high level of athleticism and length to have an enormous impact on the defensive side of the ball.

Tre Jones

The first thing that jumps out about Tre Jones when preparing for the draft is his incredible steadiness at the point guard position. Jones rarely gets sped up with the ball in his hands or taken out of his point guard mindset. He’s a true floor general that understands the nuances of the game from a lead guard perspective.

Mailbag

Anderson answers mailbag questions at the end of every podcast episode, so be sure to follow him on Twiter at @Benshoops to submit your questions.

Below you can read brief excerpts of Anderson’s answers from the podcast, but find more, and fuller responses in the podcast above.

Anderson: “I think it might be the most realistic option if the Jazz are going to use their full mid-level exception on a player and use it on a big man. Derrick Favors makes the most sense because there’s mutual interest. Now Dell Demps is back with the Jazz who traded for Favors in New Orleans. He’s going to feel wanted if he comes to the Jazz because Demps wanted him, and we know the Jazz wanted him but had to give up on him to make space for Boyan Bogdanovic and Mike Conley.”

Anderson: “Here’s the thing about George Niang, I actually think he’s an NBA player. I think he’s a ninth guy. I think the Jazz were forced to play him as their seventh guy … And that’s no slight to Niang. He’s a ninth-man in the NBA, but because other moves the Jazz made didn’t work out, he was forced to play seventh. So I think the Jazz try and bring him back.”

Anderson: “He has the potential to start. He started in place of DeAndre Ayton when Ayton was suspended for whatever his drug issue was early in the season. I think that’s positive for the Jazz and I think Baynes would make sense. You would hope his relationship with Joe Ingles from the Australian National team could play in the Jazz favor. But Baynes makes a ton of sense for the Jazz and might be worth the full Mid-Level Exception.”
