SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Multiple NFL teams and their head coaches were fined for not wearing face coverings during games in the second week of the season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The NFL insider reported on Monday, September 21, that three coaches were fined $100,000 and their organizations were fined $250,000.

The coaches who were reportedly fined are Vic Fangio (Denver Broncos), Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks), and Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco 49ers).

During the 2020 season, the league is requiring that team personnel and coaches wear face coverings while on the sideline during games amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“NFL fined three head coaches – – Denver’s Vic Fangio, Seattle’s Pete Carroll and SF’s Kyle Shanahan – $100,000 each for not wearing masks Sunday, and each of their teams another $250,000, sources told ESPN,” Schefter tweeted. “So that’s $1.05 million dollars in fines for not wearing masks.”

On September 14, the NFL sent a memo to teams reminding them of the policy after team personnel, including head coaches, failed to wear face coverings throughout games in week one.

During Monday Night Football on September 21, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton were shown on ESPN’s broadcast without face coverings on.

Schefter added to his report during the game that the NFL might not be done with fines this week.

“And based on the video of tonight’s Monday Night Football game, the NFL might not be done this week doling out fines to HCs,” he added.

The game between the Saints and Raiders is broadcast on ESPN.
