SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau and Preston Summerhays headline the local field ahead of the 120th US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York.

Will Finau Finally Get Over The Hump?

Finau, 31, is hoping to secure his first major tournament win this week and add to his tally of one PGA Tour victory in his career. The task will not be easy as the Winged Foot Golf Club has purposely made the course conditions difficult. The rough is as tall as a 23 ounce can of soda, the greens are rolling like an ice rink, the fairways are narrow and the wind is expected to howl.

Nonetheless, Finau is entering the US Open in some rare major championship form. Recently, he finished in fourth place at the PGA Championship and since 2018 his worst finish at a major is fifth, which came at the 2018 US Open held just up the road from Winged Foot at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Finau’s week will begin on the first hole with his tee time scheduled for 11:16 a.m. on Thursday and on Friday he will tee off hole number 10 at 5:56 a.m. Both rounds will be played alongside Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson.

Young Prodigy On The Loose

Summerhays, 18, is debuting in his first US Open. He hails from a rich golfing family and has had nothing but success up until this point in his career. Summerhays made the field by winning the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in remarkable fashion. The young prodigy knocked off then world junior number one in the round of 16 before staging a four-shot deficit comeback in the final to prevail victorious at Inverness Golf Club in Ohio last summer.

His father, Boyd, also happens to be the swing coach for Finau and is seen travelling the PGA circuit tinkering and mentoring Finau along the way. Boyd has even carried the bag for Finau on occasion but this week his energy will be split between his son and the current world number 16.

Summerhays will tee off the 10th hole on Thursday at 5:12 a.m. alongside Tom Lewis and Jason Kokrak while his round on Friday begins on the first hole at 10:32 a.m.

Summerhays is one of 13 amateurs competing in the field of 144 players.
