Real Salt Lake Embarrassed By Colorado Rapids On Home Soil

Sep 12, 2020, 9:45 PM | Updated: 11:56 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – For the first time since 2017 the Colorado Rapids picked up three points against Real Salt Lake. The win for the Rapids came in a convincing 5-0 fashion as RSL was shamefaced in front of home fans.

RSL was demoralized and came crashing back to earth following a thrashing at home against their rivals, the Colorado Rapids.

“Horrible gameplan by me tonight, I did not get the guys ready,” Juarez said following the conclusion of the match.

The match began with two goals from Diego Rubio inside the first 10 minutes to give the hosts an early buffer. Rubio has previously not scored a goal for the Rapids this season.

RSL looked half the team from a few nights ago against LAFC.

Juarez opted only to make one change; Pablo Ruiz out, Everton Luiz in. The lack of energy may have been a result of tired legs.

Halftime Help?

Nonetheless, RSL managed to enter the main interval down two goals.

Juarez apparently noticed the lack of energy and made a halftime adjustment bringing on Douglas Martinez and pulling Justin Meram.

Unfortunately, Martinez’s night did not last long. In the 64th minute, he was shown a red card for palming a Rapids player in the face while trying to break on a counter attack while having his jumper pulled.

RSL was down to ten men and chasing a four-goal deficit.

Shortly before the red card was shown to Martinez, RSL conceded two more goals.

2020 is an odd year and it seems that the strange nature of the current world that we live in is transitioning to Major League Soccer.

Generally, you can blame the third game in a week as an adequate answer for a performance like RSL put up this evening. Only this time the Rapids were playing their third game in a week and they were playing it away from home on RSL’s home turf; Rio Tinto Stadium.

The match would end 5-0.

“I apologize to the fans, it is not acceptable to lose 5-0,” Kreilach said.

Following the final whistle, Everton Luiz lost his temper and had to be held back from the Rapids team.

Next Match

Real Salt Lake will have a much needed week off before hosting the Vancouver Whitecaps for the first time this season.

The Whitecaps currently sit in 11th place in the Western Conference but have two games, including a midweek matchup against Montreal, to play before they face RSL.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 on the 19th of September. You can watch the game by visiting KSLSports.com or by downloading the KSL TV app.
