College Football Playoff Trophy Will Be On Display At BYU-Navy Game

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The road to the College Football Playoff begins here in Annapolis, Maryland for the season opener between BYU and Navy.

College Football’s crowning achievement, the CFP Trophy, will be on display at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium along the sidelines. ESPN has been promoting this Labor Day night matchup between the Cougars and Midshipmen non-stop since the Week Zero game between Central Arkansas and Austin Peay. So it only made sense the television partner with the Playoff highlighted the sport’s highest honor.

The Playoff Committee has stated they plan to have a normal selection process this season despite nearly half of the FBS not playing this fall. On December 20th, the Committee will reveal the four teams selected to play in the Playoff Semifinals on January 1st.

The College Football Playoff begins its seventh year of an initial 12-year agreement. So far the Playoff has not produced any program from the Group of 5 ranks, where Navy resides in the American Athletic Conference. BYU has no contractual connection to the Playoff as an FBS Independent.

This is only the second time since the Playoff era began in 2014 that BYU has been in a game where the Playoff Trophy has present on the sidelines. The other was in 2014 when BYU was undefeated and nationally-ranked against in-state rival Utah State. BYU lost that game by a score of 35-20.
