PROVO, Utah – The BYU football team has released their depth chart heading into week one versus the Navy Midshipmen.

Junior quarterback Zach Wilson was named the starting quarterback, which wasn’t much of a surprise. There were a few surprises, however.

Here are three of my observations from the initial BYU depth chart of the 2020 season.

3 Observations from BYU Depth Chart – Navy Week

#1 Isaac Rex Named Outright Backup at Tight End

Matt Bushman was always going to be the starter. That’s a no brainer. But I’m slightly surprised Isaac Rex was named the outright backup tight end. There were three “OR’s” listed on the depth chart and it wouldn’t have surprised me if the backup tight end position was one of those “OR’s.” The fact that it’s not a debate speaks volumes to the type of role that Isaac Rec will have in this offense.

#2 Co-Starters at Running Back

Sophomore Tyler Allgeier received plenty of praise during fall camp, but I didn’t expect him to be a co-starter with Lopini Katoa at the running back spot. He wasn’t even a full-time running back last year and now he looks to have a pivotal role in the BYU offense. Allgeier was second on the team in average yards per carry last season behind Jackson McChesney.

#3 “CINCO” Position For Chaz Ah You

You might be wondering what the “Cinco” position is. I know I did. I expected Ah You to be the back up At the nickel position behind starter Kavika Fonua, but that role belongs to junior Shamon Willis.

The Cinco position is a “hybrid position” as defined by head coach Kalani Sitake.

Sitake was coy when articulating the exact assignments of the position but described it as a role for players who can do multiple things.

“If I showed you five plays, they might be doing five different things,” said Sitake.

It will be interesting to see how defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki utilizes the nickel and Cinco positions this season, especially against the triple-option opponents.
