SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association announced zero players tested positive for the coronavirus disease, COVID-19, after another round of test results came back.

On Wednesday, August 12, the league and the NBPA said no new positive tests have occurred inside the bubble at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex since the last results were released on August 5.

“Of the 342 players tested for COVID-19 on the NBA campus since test results were last announced on August 5, zero have returned confirmed positive tests,” the NBA and NBPA said in a statement. “In the event that a player on the NBA campus returns a confirmed positive test in the future, he will be isolated until he is cleared for leaving isolation under the rules established by the NBA and the Players Association.”

The results of zero positive COVID-19 tests has become a pattern for the NBA’s bubble. Since the league’s announcement on July 20, no new positive tests for the virus have occurred inside the bubble.

Since the release on July 20, the league has released additional results on July 29, August 5, and August 12.

In late July, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps reported that NBPA executive director Michele Roberts thinks a bubble might be necessary for the 2020-21 NBA season.

“If tomorrow looks like today, I don’t know how we say we can do it differently,” Roberts told ESPN. “If tomorrow looks like today, and today we all acknowledge — and this is not Michele talking, this is the league, together with the PA and our respective experts saying, ‘This is the way to do it’ — then that’s going to have to be the way to do it.”

The NBA seeding games are scheduled to wrap up in the coming days and the postseason is scheduled to begin on August 17.

Coronavirus Resources

How Do I Prevent It?

The CDC has some simple recommendations, most of which are the same for preventing other respiratory illnesses or the flu:

  • Avoid close contact with people who may be sick
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Always wash your hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

Additional Resources

If you see evidence of PRICE GOUGING, the Utah Attorney General’s Office wants you to report it. Common items in question include toilet paper, water, hand sanitizer, certain household cleaners, and even cold medicine and baby formula. Authorities are asking anyone who sees price gouging to report it to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection at 801-530-6601 or 800-721-7233. The division can also be reached by email at [email protected].
