SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Everyone that follows BYU football over the past 40 years seems to have a Jim McMahon story. Usually they are the stuff of legends especially as time continues to pass since he concluded his Hall of Fame career with the Cougars.

But now McMahon is telling his story in his own words in a new documentary set to release in 2021.

The documentary is titled, “Mad Mac: The Memory of Jim McMahon.”

Mad Mac is a feature length documentary that is set to tell the story of two-time Super Bowl Champion and BYU Hall of Famer Jim McMahon and the extreme memory issues he currently suffers from stemming back to his playing days.

Details on Jim McMahon Documentary

The documentary is coming from Forty FPS Films and the description of the film is sure to get everyone excited.

He knew only one speed — hell-bent — a zealous pace that brought him athletic records, fame, injury and fast criticism. Jim McMahon digested football and life with similar fervor, the two often battling each other.

The quarterback loved bars and night life, leaving residue that sometimes led to the field the next day. He blew up at coaches, ignored play calls, screamed in the huddle. He was brash and flamboyant, his headbands, exotic haircuts and dark sunglasses stoking a rebel-without-pause image.

According to the Forty FPS website, Mad Mac will hit the festival circuit in 2021 and then be available for streaming next year as well.

During Jim McMahon’s career at BYU, the “punky QB” from Roy, Utah, set 75 NCAA records at the time his career concluded in 1981. McMahon passed for 9,536 yards in an era of college football where passing the football was still a foreign concept.

Since his days at BYU and in the NFL, McMahon has been open and honest about battling dementia and the impacts football has had on his brain. The film is being directed by C.J. Wallis who has previously worked on Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much, a documentary on a man who gamed The Price is Right.
