PROVO, Utah – The pieces are starting to come together in regards to the BYU football schedule in 2020. BYU’s game against old Mountain West Conference rival San Diego State is not going anywhere.
On Thursday, San Diego State athletic director JD Wicker was on San Diego sports radio station XTRA 1360. Wicker discussed his program’s plans for a football schedule after the Mountain West Conference announced league members could have two non-conference games.
JD Wicker told @costaxtra1360 and @Judson1360 that BYU will remain on the schedule this year as one of two SDSU football non-conference opponents.

Wicker made it clear the rivalry game against BYU isn’t going anywhere.
“So we’ll keep BYU. BYU’s on the schedule after September 26th,” said Wicker.
The game between BYU and San Diego State is scheduled for November 14th in Provo. Last year the two programs met in San Diego where the Aztecs pulled off an upset victory defeating BYU by a score of 13-3.

This news comes on the same day as BYU announcing that Navy would be the Cougars season-opener on Labor Day night in Annapolis in front of a nationally-televised ESPN audience.
2020’s matchup between BYU and San Diego State will be the 38th meeting in football. BYU owns a 28-8-1 series lead over the Aztecs. The last matchup in Provo was in 2010 when the two programs were members of the Mountain West Conference.
BYU has two other games against Mountain West Conference programs scheduled in 2020. Utah State issued a press release on Thursday that the Aggies are tentatively scheduled to open their 2020 season against the Cougars on October 2nd.
BYU’s other game against a program from the Mountain West is on Friday, November 6th against Boise State. Both BYU and Boise State have formed a strong relationship since the Cougars became a football Independent. The two have played annually since 2012 and are set to play all but one year between now and 2034.
