PROVO, Utah – For the first time in BYU football history, a player will be wearing the number zero.

Heralded BYU freshman wide receiver Kody Epps unveiled on Wednesday via his personal social media he’s taking the number zero.

This is the first year that the NCAA approved players could wear the number zero. It was a rule change that went into effect this past winter. Epps began BYU fall camp on Tuesday listed as No. 7 but after one day wearing the number he’s opting for the historic number zero.

Epps was one of the highest-rated signees in BYU football’s 2020 recruiting class. A three-star prospect from California powerhouse Mater Dei High School, Epps set Mater Dei records for receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in a single season last year.

USA Today named Kody Epps one of their four First-Team All-American wide receivers from last season’s high school football season.

BYU Passing Game Coordinator Aaron Roderick told KSL Sports back in February that he felt Epps was the best wide receiver in Southern California during the 2019 high school season. Roderick also said on Epps, “I don’t usually expect a true freshman to play, but I think there’s a good chance he could play this year.”

Epps joins a BYU wide receiver room that’s looking to replace its top three receivers from a season ago in Micah Simon, Talon Shumway, and Aleva Hifo.

BYU is currently in fall camp in preparations for a season that is still to be determined in regards to the schedule the Cougars will amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
