SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah wide receiver Kenneth Scott released a song that he created, titled “times like this.”

Scott played for the Utes from 2011-15 where he racked up 1,464 yards and 11 touchdowns.

It’s the second song that Scott has released. His first was back in December 2019 just before Utah played Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship game.

The song came to light when Scott was watching videos from his childhood.

“I was watching old videos of my mom and I,” Scott told KSL Sports. “Later that night I started to think about how I felt watching those moments on video. I started reminiscing on conversations we used to have about sharing the times that I’m in right now (which inspired the hook) such as getting married, having a daughter, a family, being a father, making it through our past struggles and overcoming them. So it was just me expressing my present feelings from my past experiences.”

Scott posted the song on Twitter. The song goes with videos from his childhood.

Scott gave a lot of credit to both songs to his producer Anthony Ruiz (aka AR15). The two connected through a producer/artist community platform called “Monster A&R” where producers and artists can meet and collaborate with. Scott and Ruiz hit it off when they met in person at a producer camp in Atlanta, Georgia in 2019.

Thought Behind ‘Times Like This’

After watching those videos and looking back on his childhood, Scott put all of that into a song about leaving his legacy.

“It’s about my childhood experiences and overcoming adversity that ultimately led to becoming a husband and father,” Scott mentioned. “Showcasing my efforts of trying to leave a legacy for the ones who look up to me. So when that time comes when I’m no longer here, I can still be able to have an impact – like my mother still does for me.”

The former Utes’ mother passed away after her battle with lupus on December 29, 2016.

The song started to form when Scott took the lyrics to Ruiz for him to build a beat around.

“Times like this was a unique track,” Ruiz told KSL Sports. “Scott had sent me the vocal acappella for me to make the beat around it. This is one of my favorite songs I produced. I think the message and story he’s spittin on this track is super heartfelt and I just wanted to provide the best frame for his picture.”

Part of the first verse of the song:

“What’s the price of being famous? I don’t want to know the cost,” part of the lyrics said. “People telling me I’m great. I be tryna shrug it off. Cause I then seen people win. Then they turned it to a loss. The way the cycle keep on circling I ain’t tryna get washed. I don’t want to let it hinder me mentally.”

Ruiz told KSL Sports the one thing that he wants fans to take away from this song when they listen to it.

“To stay true to yourself no matter where life takes you,” Ruiz stated.

“Remember to leave a legacy,” Scott said when asked about what he wants fans to take away from the song. “Build a foundation to where your name outlives you.”

‘Rise Up’

Scott’s first song that he released came before the Pac-12 Championship game in December 2019 called “rise up.” The song was meant to motivate and fire up the players as well as the fan base.

Scott’s lyrics symbolized the recent play of the 2019 Utah football team and what he experienced from is time in the program.

“We are stacking them W’s, pay attention. We stay on top of our division, we go from BCS busters to Playoff contenders,” Scott rapped.

Almost eight months after releasing “rise up,” Scott is still receiving love from Utah fans about the song.

“The fans are showing SO much love and it’s definitely appreciated!” Scott said. “I made the song for the fans so that they can have an anthem to listen to for years on and be proud of the accomplishments of the team.”

Scott credited Ruiz for the work on the instrumental part of the song. The Pennsylvania native enjoyed helping Scott create a song for Utah football players and fans to enjoy.

“Making that song was super fun,” Ruiz said. “So glad that I got to be apart of it. I’m from Pennsylvania but I can say I’m a Utes fan most definitely.”

Now that Scott has released two songs, Ruiz thinks the sky is the limit for the former Ute as a rapper.

“I think if Scott keeps staying consistent and keeps up his work ethic that we all know he has, the sky’s the limit for him,” Ruiz mentioned. “Even outside of working with him, I am a fan and can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

When asked if he has more songs coming out in the future, Scott said he had to put his insecurities aside.

“Yes, I do plan to release more songs,” Scott stated. “I have close to 100 unreleased songs that my plan is to one day share them over time (not all at once) with the world instead of holding onto them. I had to let go of my insecurities in releasing my music and had to realize that music is therapy and could make someone feel on top of the world, hyped up, inspired, motivated, etc.”
