SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – BYU’s conference affiliate, the West Coast Conference (WCC) announced on Monday that they plan to continue operating in a “remote setting for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year.”

Based in San Bruno, California since 2010, this decision to work remotely comes at a time where the league’s 10-year office lease is nearing an expiration coming up at the end of August. The league didn’t announce where the new office would be for the 68-year old conference.

The WCC has been working remotely since March 13th, three days after the conclusion of the West Coast Conference Basketball Championships that took place in Las Vegas earlier this year.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the way we operate, the way we think and the way we live,” West Coast Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez said. “We continue to have thorough conversations with our membership as we plan for the 2020-21 season. While working remotely can present challenges at times, we have effectively continued our operations in this environment over the last four months.

“Our mission is to serve our institutions and most importantly our student-athletes. We continue to emphasize the importance of collaboration with colleagues, while prioritizing the health and safety of everyone. The expiration of our office lease provides the flexibility to make the decision to work remote for an extended period of time. We will continue to monitor and take direction from local health officials to evaluate the appropriate time to return to operating out of a permanent office.”

COVID-19’s impact on the WCC financially

COVID-19 has had other impacts on the West Coast Conference beyond just the conference headquarters working remotely. The WCC’s overall operating budget for the 2021 fiscal year will be reduced by 10 percent. That was decided during the league’s annual summer meetings for Executive Council and Presidents’ Council.
