PROVO, Utah – The Cougar Club, BYU’s official booster organization for the school’s athletic department has hired a new director.

BYU Associate Athletic Director of Development Chad Lewis announced the hiring of Greg Vehar as the Cougar Club’s new director. Vehar replaces Mike Middleton who oversaw the Cougar Club for the past 22 years and is now the Dean of External Relations at the BYU Law School.

Middleton’s right-hand man for 20 of those 22 years was Vehar who became the Assistant Director of BYU’s booster group in 2000.

“We are pleased to announce Greg as the Director of the Cougar Club,” said Lewis. “I’ve worked closely with Greg for many years and have been impressed with his ability to serve our club members and help them in their efforts to support BYU student-athletes. I’m confident in his ability to grow the Cougar Club and strengthen the athletic department.”

According to BYU’s press release, BYU’s Cougar Club has nearly 5,000 members. Vehar will manage and oversee services for those members along with putting on numerous events each year with a “charge to continue to grow the club membership.”

From Orem, Utah, Vehar earned his bachelor’s degree in communication at BYU in 1993. Vehar’s previous role as Assistant Director allowed him to work closely with Cougar Club members to solicit and facilitate donations, set up scholarship endowment, coordinator annual renewals, and season tickets.

“I’m humbled and excited about the opportunity to serve as the Director of the Cougar Club,” said Vehar. “I’m grateful to Tom Holmoe and Chad Lewis for the opportunity to continue working closely with our incredible donors to elevate and strengthen the athletic program at BYU. I have a great love for the university and what it represents.”

With BYU’s athletic department operating on a self-sustaining basis, donations from the Cougar Club are important to BYU athletics’ revenue streams. According to BYU’s latest athletic financial report, 13 percent of all revenue in the 2019-20 academic year came from Cougar Club donations.

The Cougar Club has been BYU’s official booster organization since 1964.
