Former MLB Pitcher Tyson Brummett, Three Others Die In Utah Plane Crash

AMERICAN FORK, Utah – Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Tyson Brummett and three individuals died in a plane crash in Utah.

On Friday, July 3, Brummett took off from South Valley Regional Airport in West Jordan. A short time later, the plane which the ex-MLB player was flying crashed in American Fork Canyon.

Brummett and three others passed away when the aircraft crashed near Box Elder Peak in American Fork Canyon just before 8 a.m. (MDT), according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to Brummett, the other individuals were identified as Riverton residents Douglas Blackhurst, Elaine Blackhurst, and Alex Ruegner.

“The Phillies organization sends heartfelt condolences to the family of and friends of former pitcher Tyson Brummett, along with three members of the Ruegner and Blackhurst families, who tragically passed away in a plane crash yesterday morning,” the team said in a statement on Saturday, July 4.

Brummett and three others passed away when the aircraft crashed near Box Elder Peak in American Fork Canyon just before 8 a.m. (MDT), according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

One witness said the plane went into a downward corkscrew motion as it came towards the ground.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash.

Tyson Brummett’s MLB Career

After a college career at UCLA, Brummett was selected by the Phillies during the 2007 MLB Draft.

He played for Philadelphia for a short time during the 2012 MLB season.
