SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After the recent news surrounding Morgan Scalley being reinstated to the Utah football program, head coach Kyle Whittingham believes that Scalley will continue to be an outstanding recruiter.
Scalley was placed on suspension on June 5 after the program was notified that he used a racial slur in a text message to a recruit in 2013. Utah brought back Scalley and will now face potential backlash after what transpired in June.
One of the challenges that Scalley will have to face is to continue to be able to recruit at a high level. But, Whittingham thinks that in time Scalley will return to that level.
“Recruiting in it of itself is a big challenge, it’s competitive, constantly trying to dispel this and things that are out there and sell your program,” Whittingham said. “Morgan has proven to be an outstanding recruiter through the years. In fact, 51 of the 57 players he signed to our program are minority players. He’s gonna have to work extra hard to get some of that trust back, but I have no doubt that that’ll happen in time. But recruiting is like I said, always a challenge and always something that takes a lot of effort, you got to do it every day. It’s something that is the lifeblood of our program, we all know that. I believe that Morgan will continue to be an outstanding recruiter.”

Utah signed their best recruiting class in school history in 2020 with Scalley playing a part in bringing those prospects to the Utah football program. Those prospects included Clark Phillips III, Van Fillinger, Xavier Carlton, Nate Ritchie among many others.
