BYU’s Chris Burgess Recognized As One Of College Basketball’s ‘Impactful’ Assistants

PROVO, Utah – Like everything else for BYU basketball this past year, the first season on the Cougars bench was a smashing success for assistant coach Chris Burgess.

Burgess, who followed head coach Mark Pope from Utah Valley to BYU last year, was recognized for his efforts this past season as one of college basketball’s 50 most impactful mid-major assistants.

The recognition was presented by Silver Waves Media, a media organization based out of the west coast.

BYU coach Mark Pope quote tweeted Burgess’s recognition saying, “No doubt!” Burgess is viewed as a rising star in the college basketball coaching world and he’s found instant success on the recruiting trail at BYU. Along with Pope, Burgess was instrumental in helping the Cougars land Purdue transfer Matt Haarms. Considered by many outlets as the best grad transfer this off-season.

Burgess also identified and landed a letter of intent from New Mexico Junior College forward Gideon George in this past recruiting cycle.

A graduate at the University of Utah, Burgess began his coaching career with the Utes as a student assistant under Larry Krystkowiak in 2013. From Utah, Burgess was a coach in the junior college ranks at Salt Lake Community College and Indian Hills C.C. Then Pope gave Burgess his first Division 1 coaching position at Utah Valley.
