PROVO, Utah – Two of the top college basketball programs out west in BYU and San Diego State will square off again the next two years.
The programs announced a new two-game series that will begin on December 1st, 2020 at Viejas Arena in San Diego. BYU will then host the Aztecs in Provo during the 2021-2022 season.
This past season both teams finished ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 polls with BYU at No. 18 and the Aztecs at No. 6 with a 30-2 record.

Both programs were longstanding conference rivals in the WAC and Mountain West Conferences. BYU left the MWC in 2011 and the two teams have met three times since the Cougars departure and San Diego State has won all three meetings. Including a thriller last year in Provo that saw SDSU pull out a 76-71 victory in each team’s second game of the year.
After that matchup, both coaches in BYU’s Mark Pope and SDSU’s Brian Dutcher expressed how much they enjoyed the BYU-SDSU matchup and the quality of play that comes from those games between the old conference rivals.
Each team will be looking to replace star power from their nationally-ranked teams this past season. BYU loses Yoeli Childs, Jake Toolson, and TJ Haws, while SDSU looks to replace Malachi Flynn who declared early for the NBA Draft.
