SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Green Bay Packers selected former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Along with Love addition to their roster, the Packers also introduced a potential quarterback controversy in the future.

For more than a decade, the Wisconsin based franchise has been led by future hall of fame QB Aaron Rodgers.

In 2005, Rodgers was placed into a situation that’s similar to the one Love is currently in, when the Packers drafted him late in the first round while NFL legend Brett Favre was still years away from retirement.

The draft pick out of California had to wait more than one season to get his chance as the Packers’ starter. Rodgers sat on the sidelines and waited three seasons for the opportunity to take over.

Rodgers still has good football left in him and Love will have the opportunity to learn from his greatness during practice and on the sidelines during Green Bay’s upcoming season.

After 2020, the question should be asked, how long until Love replaces Rodgers as Rodgers did with Favre?

Green Bay currently has three QBs on its roster, including Love.

Rodgers, a 16-year veteran, and third-year pro, Tim Boyle, will be Love’s competition in the quarterback room.

One can assume that Rodgers will be Green Bay’s starter until one of the following scenarios occurs:

  • Rodgers retires
  • Green Bay trades Rodgers

How long until one of those scenarios plays out is anyone’s guess. Until then, Love can compete with Boyle for the QB2 spot and soak up all the knowledge he can, especially playing behind one of the best to ever do it.
