SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic has forced all college football programs including the University of Utah to shut down their spring camp but the players are still finding ways to stay in shape.
The coaches at Utah are finding ways to motivate not only their players but the fans. For the players, spring football was cut short after the team had just three practices.
Once school was moved strictly to online, most of the players have gone home for quarantine.
One of the players that fans were excited to see was freshman cornerback Clark Phillips III. The highest rated recruit in school history was expected to start competing for a starting spot in the secondary that was depleted with graduation and players entering the NFL Draft after their junior year.
Phillips Brothers Working Out
For Phillips, his opportunities were cut short in spring football and is now home in California where he is continuing to workout and stay in shape. His younger brother Bryce is also a cornerback who is still in high school.
Clark and Bryce are working out together under their father’s and coach Sharrieff Shah’s instructions but they don’t need your average gym to get in a great workout.

The workout in the video isn’t the only thing they do.
“We mix it up but pops has had us on that hill off and on since we were 9 years old,” Bryce Phillips told KSL Sports. “We have been on it a lot lately as we are trying to keep our strength and conditioning up and work on acceleration. As DB’s we know we have to be able to run.”
Both Clark and Bryce are taking classes online but when they get a break, they are working out when some would binge a show on Netflix.
“We don’t have much free time,” Bryce stated. “Having online classes and then train and then take a lunch and then we workout in the evening. Free time is in evening or at lunch we might take a longer one but we are trying to keep a routine. Clark has a little bit lighter load so he may get two workouts in and have a little more free time.”
When asked who is putting the workout plans together, it was a mix between Clark and Bryce’s father and Utah defensive backs coach Sharrieff Shah.
“Clark has a plan from Coach Shah and I do the DB work with him and then some of the other stuff my dad writes to help me work on things I need to get better at,” Bryce said.
Bryce is a part of the 2021 recruiting class as a defensive back and is currently a three-star prospect but with these type of workouts and with the consistency of them, Bryce could elevate that rating. He is currently being recruited by Mountain West and Pac-12 schools including Utah.
