Patrick Mahomes: Alex Smith Wasn’t There, But He Was Part Of Win

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – One day after the Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in franchise history, their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes credited former Utah Utes and current Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith as a part of the win.

Mahomes just finished his third season in the NFL and his second as the starting quarterback. In the last two seasons, Mahomes has won the NFL MVP award (2018) and the Super Bowl MVP this season.

During his rookie year, Smith was the starting quarterback for the Chiefs, taking the rising star under his wing and showing him how to be an NFL quarterback.

While Mahomes was learning from Smith as a rookie, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid called it an “invaluable experience” for Mahomes.

“He texted me right after the game, saying he enjoyed it just as much as we did,” Mahomes told ESPN.com. “He wasn’t there, but he was part of it – I think that’s the biggest thing. He built the culture that I came into. He was the guy that led the team to all these successful seasons and built the winning culture.”

Smith spent five seasons with the Chiefs before being traded to the Washington Redskins after the 2017 season, Mahomes’ rookie year. The former Ute suffered a horrific leg injury during the 2018 season that he is still recovering from but hopes to make a comeback to the NFL.

In the Super Bowl LIV win, Mahomes threw for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while running the ball 9 times for 29 yards and another score, winning the MVP of the Super Bowl.
