SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The BYU men’s basketball team collapsed after owning a 14-point lead in the second half to fall by a point on the road to the San Francisco Dons.

The Cougars surrendered a 21-0 run to the Dons during the middle of the second half before fighting back in the final minutes for a one-possession loss at War Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday, January 25.

BYU led San Francisco 54-40 with 15:56 left in the game before allowing the Dons’ big run.

San Francisco, led by bench guard Khalil Shabazz, went on the run while not allowing any BYU points for over seven minutes of game time.

An Alex Barcello three-pointer gave BYU its first made field goal in 7:23 of play to cut the Dons’ lead to 61-57 with 8:33 remaining in the second half.

BYU fought back to make it a one-possession game on a TJ Haws layup with 57 seconds left in regulation. Four free throws by the Dons during the final minute sealed the defeat and collapse by the Cougars.

San Francisco beat BYU 83-82 behind Shabazz’s 32 points off the bench. The Dons guard shot 10-10 on field goals including 6-6 from behind the arc.

BYU was led by Haws’ 20 points on 7-12 shooting and 3-4 from downtown.

Cougar forward Yoeli Childs scored 19 points on 8-17 field goals. He added 7 rebounds, 8 assists, and a steal.

The Cougars shot 51.7 percent overall and 55.6 percent from three. Unfortunately for BYU, the defense wasn’t enough to limit the Dons.

San Francisco shot an impressive 54.5 percent on field goals and a 52.0 percent on triples. The Dons also went 10-11 from the free-throw line.

BYU was outrebounded by the Dons by six boards.

The Dons improved to 15-7 on the season and 4-3 in West Coast Conference games.

The Cougars fell to 15-7 overall and 4-3 in WCC play.

BYU is back in action on Thursday, January 30 when it hosts the Pepperdine Waves at 6:30 p.m. (MDT). The game will broadcast on KSL NewsRadio 1160 AM and 102.7 FM. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
