BYU Guard Trevin Knell Suffers Thumb Injury, Will Miss Three Weeks

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball keeps finding a way to win despite all of the injuries that have plagued this year’s team.

The latest injury came on Thursday during shootaround before BYU’s game against San Diego. Freshman guard Trevin Knell “busted his thumb” according to BYU head coach Mark Pope after the Cougars defeated the Toreros 93-70.

“We were in a shooting drill in shootaround and a ball hit his thumb and busted his thumb, so he’s probably three weeks now,” said Pope.

Pope then followed up with a joke saying, “I think Evan Troy might have been the one that passed the ball because he’s so anxious to get minutes. I can’t verify that, but maybe.”

In 16 games played this season, Knell has averaged 6.7 minutes per game and scored 1.8 points per game. Pope in previous weeks has said he needs to find a way to get Knell more minutes because of the improved play the true freshman has shown on the defensive end.

A former standout out of Woods Cross High School, Knell in his first season with BYU after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Knell’s career-high performance came against Division two program Montana Tech back in November where he scored nine points.

Along with Knell other injured players on BYU right now include Yoeli Childs (finger), Jesse Wade (knee), and Gavin Baxter (shoulder).
