SALT LAKE CITY – Pockets of BYU fans on social media and message boards rejoiced and congratulated former BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall when his Virginia Cavaliers defeated Virginia Tech to give the Hoos their first ACC Championship Game appearance.

Fast forward to this weekend and the congratulatory comments aren’t flowing as much from BYU fans for Bronco’s latest victory. This one coming on the recruiting trail for a recruit that BYU was pursuing as well.

Four-star offensive tackle Andrew Gentry from Littleton, Colorado, announced on his personal Twitter account on Saturday that he would be continuing his football career with Mendenhall and the Hoos instead of BYU, Michigan, or Stanford.

The No. 60 ranked prospect by 247Sports, Gentry projects to be one of the top offensive line recruits in the class of 2020.

Gentry’s college decision was originally expected to be announced back on June 28th after he completed his five official visits. He delayed his decision so he could gather more insight into the four teams he was considering.

Back in June, Gentry hopped on KSL NewsRadio’s Cougar Sports Saturday to discuss his recruitment and what he liked about BYU at the time.

“There really isn’t a program quite like BYU who knows how to handle missionaries getting back,” said Gentry. “They’ve obviously done it [missionary program] so much, that’s huge. The other thing too [with BYU] is having family connections there.  Obviously, my brother is there now [JT Gentry] and I have an uncle who played there in the late ’90s, early 2000s. My grandpa played football there. So it’s just been in the family that BYU is kind of part of our blood.”

Gentry is expected to sign with Virginia this Wednesday during the early National Signing period in College Football.

BYU currently has 21 commits in the class of 2020 and one offensive line commitment in three-star Isaiah Tupou from Sacramento, California.
