BYU’s Tyler Allgeier Scores 57-Yard TD After Moving From LB To RB

AMHERST, Mass. – With BYU running back Sione Finau out for the season due to an ACL injury suffered earlier this week in practice, the Cougars have had to reshuffle the running back personnel.

Because of the injury to Finau, BYU redshirt freshman Tyler Allgeier switched from linebacker to running back this week. In his first offensive snap of the season against the UMass Minutemen, Allgeier had his name called right away on BYU’s second drive of the game. On Allgeier’s first offensive touch of the season, quarterback Zach Wilson passed to Allgeier and the Fontana, California native took it to the house for a 57-yard touchdown.

The touchdown was BYU’s first of the game and put the Cougars on top 7-0.

Allgeier joined the BYU football program in the 2018 season where he committed to the Cougars as a preferred walk-on running back. He played in four games last season as a true freshman. Back in spring ball, Allgeier was competing with Lopini Katoa for first-team reps at running back.

After BYU added Ty’Son Williams and Emmanuel Esukpa in the off-season as graduate transfers, Allgeier was moved from running back to linebacker when fall camp concluded. Allgeier led BYU in tackles earlier this month in their win against Liberty.
