BYU Women’s Soccer Receives Two-Seed In NCAA Tournament

Nov 11, 2019, 3:33 PM | Updated: 10:56 pm

PROVO, Utah – BYU Soccer enters the 2019 Women’s Soccer NCAA Tournament as the only undefeated team in the field.

The 18-0-1 Cougars watched the NCAA Selection Show at Studio C in the BYU Broadcasting building on Monday and let out big cheers after they heard their team announced as a 2-seed.

BYU will host Boise State Friday night at historic South Field at 6 p.m. This year’s BYU soccer team is the first in program history to go undefeated in the regular season.

“I’m excited about the draw. Sometimes you just never know what you’re going to see when you watch the (selection) show. I think it’s a great draw for us. Really excited about it,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood.

Despite being the lone undefeated team in the NCAA Tournament field, Rockwood didn’t consider a one-seed. Her hope all along was receiving a two-seed, and they received that.

The number two seed is the second time in program history that BYU has received a national seed. The last time that happened was in 2012 when BYU was a number-one seed and they advanced all the way to the Elite Eight.

Friday night’s opening round matchup against Boise State is the first time the two programs will have ever met on the pitch. The Broncos enter the NCAA Tournament with an 18-4 record and were the automatic qualifier out of the Mountain West Conference.

If BYU advances past Boise State, the Cougars will host the winner of the Louisville or Lipscomb match.

This berth in the NCAA Tournament is BYU’s 20th all-time as a program. Rockwood has coached BYU to all those appearances.
