ASU Coach Herm Edwards Apologizes To Kyle Whittingham

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Following their 21-3 loss to the Utes on Saturday, Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards apologized to Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham after the game.

Edwards was “embarrassed” with how he team performed, committing 12 penalties for 122 yards with some flags being thrown for unnecessary roughness and one targeting call when defensive back Evan Fields was ejected for targeting.

“First of all, I told (Utah Head) Coach (Kyle) Whittingham that I’m embarrassed with our football team when it came to the fouls,” Edwards said after the game. “We lost our composure and I don’t believe in doing that kind of stuff. I’ve never been involved in a game where a team had 12 fouls. For some reason we just lost our composure. That’s not the way we play and I apologized to him.”

The targeting call on fields came on a hit to the helmet of Utah running back Zack Moss that caused him to miss a few plays but later returned on the same drive to score his first touchdown of the game.

Edwards apologized to Whittingham when the two met at midfield after the game. The apology was picked up by the microphone that the cameras had surrounding the coach.

Two other questionable hits in the game by the Sun Devils happened to Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley, who exited the game three plays before Moss in the second quarter after injuring his leg on a hit that was flagged for unnecessary roughness.

Huntley returned to the game and on his first play back was hit late by a Arizona State defender, which was called for roughing the passer.

The Sun Devils dropped to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 play. Utah improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
