PROVO, Utah – The No. 6 ranked BYU soccer team had a three-game losing streak heading into Wednesday night’s WCC match against Pepperdine. BYU’s senior class made an emphatic statement at South Field with their play by making it known that they wouldn’t go win less against the Waves.

BYU crushed the Waves to the tune of a dominating 5-1 victory.

With the win, BYU scored their first victory in West Coast Conference play this season.

“We just came out flying. That’s how we wanted to start,” said BYU head coach Jen Rockwood. “We got off nice and early in the attack.”

The Cougars now move to 11-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the WCC. BYU is one of only two programs that has yet to experience defeat this season. The other being Virginia from the ACC who is 10-0-2 on the year.

On a night where BYU wore special blackout jerseys, the Cougars pounced on Pepperdine early jumping out to a 3-0 lead at the 22nd minute of action in the first half.

Elise Flake enters Top 10 in goals scored for a career

Freshman forward SaraJayne Affleck got the action started with a goal in the 4th minute off an assist from forward Cameron Tucker and midfielder Mikayla Colohan.

Then BYU’s star forward Elise Flake did what she does best adding two goals of her own. Flake’s second goal of the night came in the 22nd minute where Colohan made a beautiful assist with a perfect pass inside her foot.

Flake now has 11 goals on the season and 31 total in her career which ties her for 10th all-time in BYU career history with Carlee Payne Holmoe (2009-12).

Pepperdine tried to get back into the match after Shelby Little scored in the 42nd minute to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Waves were on the attack again before the end of the half but BYU goalkeeper Sabrina Davis made a great block to prevent a second goal for Pepperdine.

The Waves who had BYU’s number the last three seasons were outmatched on Wednesday. Any hope for a comeback from Pepperdine was immediately crushed in the second half when Lizzy Brady scored BYU’s fourth goal of the night four minutes into the second period.

BYU ended up with five goals on the night to give the Cougars a statement victory against a quality Pepperdine squad who defeated No. 2 Stanford earlier this season.

Injury Report

The one downside for BYU in the win was in the 60th minute. Mikayla Colohan took a hit to her left elbow which immediately went numb. According to reports, Colohan is doing okay but ended up being sidelined for the remainder of the game. Colohan finished the night with a goal and two assists.
