Sauerbrunn’s Header Gives Royals Massive Victory Against First-Place Thorns

SANDY, Utah – Utah Royals FC defender, Becky Sauerbrunn’s header in the 36th minute gave the Royals a 1-0 victory against first-place Portland Thorns FC on Friday night.
Sauerbrunn had barely entered the box when a perfectly placed ball from Christen Press set up the scoring opportunity.
The Royals took a 1-0 win on the defender’s first goal this season.

Sauerbrunn’s first goal of the 2019 season came in her ninth appearance for the Royals this season. She has started in each of her games with the Royals in 2019.
The Thorns’ Emily Sonnett assessed a red card in the 77th minute of play.
The Royals held onto the 1-0 lead against the first-place Thorns to get the victory. It was the team’s tenth clean-sheet of the season which leads the NWSL.

The Royals were outshot in the match 21-7 and had only 5 corners compared to 11 for the Thorns.
Both Sauerbrunn and Press are members of the US Women’s National team and were part of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup winning squad. Fellow Royals teammate, Kelley O’Hara is also a member of Team USA.
The Royals head on the road to face the Houston Dash on Friday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m.
