PROVO, Utah – Mady Sissoko, the top basketball recruit in the state of Utah for the class of 2020 suffered a hand injury while riding a “Razor” ATV on an official visit to BYU, Wasatch Academy head coach Dave Evans tells KSL Sports. An unnamed BYU basketball player was driving the ATV at the time of the injury.
Sissoko is a 6-9 230-pound center who has offers from the top college basketball programs in the country. Last month, Sissoko received an offer from John Calipari and the Kentucky basketball program along with long-standing offers from Tom Izzo and Michigan State and UCLA.

Wasatch Academy is one of the top high school basketball programs in the country with Sissoko leading the way. The length of time that Sissoko will be sidelined for his senior season is not known at this time. Dave Evans hopes this doesn’t sideline his star player for the entire season. Sissoko is also a member of Jimmer Elite an AAU team coached by former BYU basketball players Marty Haws and Kevin Nixon.
Sissoko’s official visit to BYU was his fourth of five official visits that a recruit can take during their recruitment. The other schools that Sissoko has taken official visits to include Colorado (during his junior year), UCLA, Michigan State, and BYU. Sissoko has one official visit remaining.
Since Mark Pope took over as BYU’s head basketball coach, Sissoko has been a significant priority to their recruiting efforts. Pope even made a trip to Africa where he traveled for 40-plus hours to visit Sissoko and his family for 90 minutes.

College Basketball’s National Signing Day for the class of 2020 recruits begins on Wednesday, November 13th.
BYU has had a long history of outdoor activities for recruits during official visits. For football recruits, official visitors usually take in the campus during the wintertime and they are able to go on snowmobiles. During the summer, ATV’s have been a common activity for hoops recruits.
Injuries or near life-threatening situations have happened in the past with recruits participating in these activities. Back in 2002, former Nebraska and Granger High defensive lineman Manaia Brown suffered a shoulder injury while on a snowmobile during his official visit. Brown still ended up transferring to play for BYU but was plagued by lingering shoulder problems his entire career with the Cougars.
Sissoko has not set a timetable on when he plans to announce his commitment to a college.
