Britain Covey: ‘Only Priority Is Getting To The Rose Bowl’

Jul 30, 2019, 2:14 PM

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah football program has all of the hype surrounding them in the Pac-12 after being picked in the preseason poll to win the conference.

Wide receiver Britain Covey knows that they have lofty goals but they can achieve them because they very talented.

He is still recovering from a knee injury that he suffered in the Pac-12 Championship game against Washington last season.

KSL Sports’ Jeremiah Jensen sat down with the Utah wide receiver to get his thoughts on the upcoming 2019 season.

JJ: First thing that everyone wants to know about is your health, do you have an update on your rehab and how things are going?

BC: I mean, it’s not linear so, sometimes it is hard to gauge, it’s not just progressive all the time. So, I am hopeful for the first game, that’s the most I can say at this point because you will have good weeks and bad weeks still. You will do one little thing like step out of your car wrong and it will swell up. Then you will go run routes and you are fine, so it’s just random.

JJ: You took so many shots last year, this is a violent game, what keeps you coming back for more?

BC: I think that some of it is the mentality, I have my two older brothers that I always played football with in the backyard and they had no mercy on me. When you get hit hard, you don’t want to give them the satisfaction of them hitting you hard, so you get right back up and then start trash talking in Spanish.

JJ: New offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, how is that transition going with the entire group on offense? How do you think that is going to play out?

BC: Coach Ludwig is a seasoned veteran, you walk in and you can feel the density in the air of just wisdom. It’s like he has done this a thousand times. I think we have so much talent this year, I mean, I said that last year and this year we have most of our guys returning. So, you get that with an offensive coordinator with that much experience, I feel like we will be really dynamic, you really won’t be able to predict what we are going to do.

JJ: Tyler Huntley is a senior now, what do you expect from your quarterback?

BC: I don’t know exactly how Tyler is with the media and all of those things. If there is anything that anyone needs to know about Tyler is that he is the most loved guy on the team. He genuinely for being in the spotlight, being the quarterback, being the captain, he doesn’t let any of it get to his head, and he is humble and he works hard and he is just happy. He is such a great guy to be around, such a good leader and I really can’t say enough about Tyler. What I expect from is what I know I am going to get, I don’t expect him to do anything out of the ordinary. I just expect him to be him, because if he is himself, then we are going to be really good.

JJ: What is it like opening the season against BYU?

BC: You are going to go from 0 to 100 in about one kickoff because it gets intense and we know that they are a great team and we have a lot of respect for him. We know we are going to have to play really well in order to come out victorious down there. It’s exciting, it’s a rivalry game, it’s fun.

JJ: There is a narrative because you guys are playing for a Pac-12 title and you have all these goals and this is the biggest game on their schedule in their minds and that this game means more the them than you. How much does this BYU game mean to you guys?

BC: I think it means a lot to us in a sense that we are just not going to lose it. We try to not look to far into the implications of rivalry and things, just the one thing Coach Whitt always says is that we don’t lose to the team down south. So, that’s why it is a big game essentially is that it is just not an option to lose and really it’s that way every week. I would be dumb and everyone would roll their eyes if I said that this game didn’t carry a little more to it. Honestly, we really do, it’s not just saying it but we do have bigger goals. We want to win the Pac-12 championship this year and that is our priority. So, we don’t want to lose the first game, but our goal is the Rose Bowl.
