ROAZHON PARK, Rennes – In the 36th minute of their second World Cup match in Group D play, Utah Royals FC and Scotland captain defender Rachel Corsie received a yellow card that led to a converted penalty kick for Japan.

The penalty put Japan up 2-0 with Yuika Sugasawa findin the back of the net.

Earlier in the match, Mana Iwabuchi started the scoring with a goal in the 23rd minute.

The penalty decision by the referee was soft according to those who weighed in on it on the broadcast.

By halftime of the match, Japan had 12 shots attempted with 2 goals and Scotland had just two shots attempted.

After losing their first match of Group D play in a 2-1 loss to England, Scotland will wrap up group action against Argentina on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Corsie has been with the Royals since they began their NWSL journey in 2018. She played 24 matches last year as a consistent starter at center back. This season, Corsie has appeared in 5 matches.
