Four-Star Recruit Andrew Gentry Sets Decision Date, Visiting BYU Later This Month

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Four-star offensive tackle Andrew Gentry is nearing a decision on which college he will be choosing to continue his football career.

Gentry said on Cougar Sports Saturday on KSL Newsradio, that four schools are standing above the rest. BYU is one of those four schools.

The number one recruit for the class of 2020 in the state of Colorado, Gentry has been receiving interest from BYU since his freshman year at Columbine High School in Littleton.

Along with BYU, the Michigan Wolverines, Virginia Cavaliers, and Stanford Cardinal are the four schools that are standing out to Gentry.

One of those four schools is going to find out very soon whether or not they landed the 82nd ranked prospect nationally (according to 247Sports) in the class of 2020.  Gentry said on Cougar Sports Saturday that he will be deciding which school he is attending on Friday, June 28th.

Gentry has some official visits he still plans to attend between now and the 28th and one of those visits will be to BYU. The official visit to Provo will take place next Monday on campus.

After a visit to Provo, Gentry will then take an official visit to Ann Arbor to see Jim Harbaugh and Michigan before ultimately deciding which college he will attend once his high school football career is over.

What helps BYU possibly stand out above Michigan, Virginia, or Stanford for Gentry is how the Cougars handle return missionaries after serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“There really isn’t a program quite like BYU who knows how to handle missionaries getting back,” said Gentry, who plans to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on Cougar Sports Saturday.

“They’ve obviously done it so much, that’s huge. The other thing too (with BYU) is having family connections there.  Obviously, my brother is there now (JT Gentry), and I have an uncle who played there in the late ’90s, early 2000s. My grandpa played football there. So it’s just been in the family that BYU is kind of part of our blood,” said Gentry.

If BYU lands a commitment from Gentry, he would be the third highest rated recruit to commit to the Cougars since 2002.  The only two in front of him would be Ben Olsen (2002) and Ofa Moheatau (2003).
