PORTLAND, Ore. – If you poll the BYU fan base on whether or not the West Coast Conference is a good fit for BYU athletics, you might get a mixed bag of results.

For the teams at BYU that are actually competing in the West Coast Conference, the results don’t lie. BYU continues to dominate as an athletic department in the WCC.

For the seventh consecutive year, BYU won the West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup.  BYU’s seven Commissioner’s Cup is a conference-high and the Cougars just completed their eighth academic year within the league.

The WCC held a banquet in Portland, Oregon, and accepting the Commissioner’s Cup award on behalf of BYU was Brigham Young University President Kevin Worth, Athletic Director Tom Holmoe, Senior Associate Athletic Director Liz Darger, and women’s basketball star Shaylee Gonzales.

According to the West Coast Conference’s official press release, the Commissioner’s Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league’s top performing school in conference play and is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men’s and women’s point totals is honored with the Commissioner’s Cup.

BYU won the 2018-19 Commissioner’s Cup by a substantial margin. The Cougars scored 106.5 points overall. The next closest was the Gonzaga Bulldogs who totaled 88.0 points on the year.  Of course, the Zags held the most recognizable crown within the conference, the Men’s Basketball regular season title. The Saint Mary’s Gaels who won the WCC Tournament this past March finished third with 87.0 points in the Cup standings.
