Weber State Softball Brings Home Multiple Season Awards

OGDEN, Utah –It’s been a great season for the Weber State softball team and the awards keep piling up.

In addition to having four first-team All-Big Sky selections, the Co-Freshman of the Year in Faith Hoe, the Wildcats can also boast the Big Sky’s Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.

This season, the Wildcats finished with a 14-2 record in conference play, the best record in program history and the best mark by a Big Sky school in the league’s seven-year history. They were 23-19 overall.

Amicone Named Coach Of The Year

The matriarch of Utah’s first family in baseball and softball, Mary Kay Amicone, has been named the 2019 Big Sky Coach of the Year for her work as the Wildcats’ head coach.

It’s the second conference coach of the year honor for Amicone, who also won the award in 2015.

In six seasons as the head coach at Weber State, Amicone has racked up 185 total wins, two conference tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Amicone is the wife of Marc Amicone, who works as the general manager of the Salt Lake Bees, Utah’s Triple-A baseball team.

Saltern Named Player Of The Year

In addition to a spot in the All-Conference outfield, junior Takesha Saltern was named the Big Sky Player of the Year.

She led the conference in batting average with a .413 average and also had the conference lead in stolen bases with 19.

Saltern was also perfect in the field during conference play with a 1.000 fielding percentage. During the season, she had 46 putouts on 55 total chances with just three errors.

Her award was the second conference player of the year honor for a Weber State player. Aubrey Whitmer, who was also a junior, won the award in 2016.

Next Up

After a strong showing in the regular season and in conference play, the Wildcats entered the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed. They will play the winner of No. 4 Sacramento State and No. 5 Portland State on Wednesday.
