‘Football Intelligence’ Stood Out To Seahawks On Utes’ Barton After Minicamp

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Seattle Seahawks wrapped up their rookie minicamp for the draft picks and undrafted free agents and the organization has a lot to be excited about. Especially with their linebackers.

Former University of Utah linebacker Cody Barton was taken in the third round of the NFL Draft after an impressive Combine and has paired nicely with Washington Huskies fifth round pick Ben Burr-Kirven.

Picking up the defensive scheme, while being a vocal leader on the field is no easy task, especially when minicamp is only three days. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was pleased with that.

“It really stood out,” he said. “It really jumped out. We’ve been in these situations many times and you could tell their expertise and their willingness to really study it up and communicate with the coaches really well. They transferred the stuff in the classroom to the field exceptionally. It stood out above any group we’ve ever had in here, those were the two best guys we’ve ever brought in,” he added.

Barton is just taking it all in through this process as he gets ready for his rookie season in the NFL.

“It’s been good,” Barton said. “It almost feels surreal at first. I feel like we are getting into a groove of things. Everyday is full of learning, excitement and a lot of fun,” he added.

The former Ute is liking the combination with Burr-Kirven on the field and think they are both really intelligent players.

“We take pride in being intelligent players,” he said. “Working with him [Burr-Kirven], we put our heads together and a lot of talking and communicating on the field and trying to take over the defense,” Barton stated.
