Savarino Gets Red Card After Kicking Opponent In Face

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Already trailing by two goals, Real Salt Lake was forced to play the second half of the match against D.C. United with just 10 men.
In the 47th minute RSL forward Jefferson Savarino drew a red card after one of his high-kicks struck D.C. United’s Luciano Acosta in the face. It was likely inadvertent and Acosta may have leaned into it, but it was still called a foul all the same.
It was the first red card of Jefferson’s career. The Venezuelan national has been with the club since 2017, when he joined the team was a Young Designated Player.

It was the eighth foul of the match in a first half that went completely amuck for RSL. Just minutes earlier, D.C. United striker Wayne Rooney completed a brace by scoring first on a penalty kick and then not much later on a chip over RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
