Weber State Loses On Last-Second Free Throws

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –  Weber State saw their game in controversial fashion in a 78-76 loss to Sacramento State.

Brekkott Chapman drained a 3-pointer five minutes into the game to give Weber State a 14-6 advantage.  The Wildcats kept up the advantage throughout the first half despite a triple by Sacramento State’s Marcus Graves, which cut the lead to 37-31 at the break.

The Wildcats continued to lead but the Hornets kept chipping away until Joshua Patton gave Sacramento State the lead at 64-63.

Weber State took back the lead, but the two teams played back and forth until the controversial finish.

Following a made free throw by Brekkott Chapman to tie the game at 76-all, both teams had a shot at the go-ahead basket.

First, Sacramento State’s Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa missed a layup with 16 seconds.

Then, Cody John’s triple rimmed out with two seconds left.

Following the missed 3-pointer, Chapman was called for a foul on Ethan Esposito, putting the Hornet on the free throw line with less than a second remaining.

Esposito drained both free throws to ice the game, leaving Weber State head coach Randy Rahe heated and yelling at the officials as he walked off the court.

Chapman had 16 points and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Caleb Nero led the Wildcats with 18 points off the bench.

Patton led the Hornets with 21 points.
