SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Utes suffered their first loss in two weeks with a 98-87 defeat to the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Arizona State came out as the aggressor, taking an early 11-2 lead in the first five minutes.

Van Dyke Shines In First Half

The Sun Devils’ lead climbed to as much as 13 in the first half, but Utah’s Parker Van Dyke, who had nailed a buzzer beater to beat UCLA last Saturday, did some serious work to get his team back in the game.

The East High product dumped in 15 pionts in the opening half, with three 3-pointers made, to get Utah back within five at the end of the first half. The Sun Devils took a 47-42 lead into the break at halftime.

Arizona State’s lead inflated to 16  again on a dunk by Zylan Cheatham midway through the second half.

The Utes got the lead down to seven with three minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Both Gach, but that was the closest that they would get as the Sun Devils held on for the win.

By The Numbers

Van Dyke and Sedrick Barefield had 17 points apiece. Timmy Allen added 13 points.

The Sun Devils’ Rob Edwards finsihed with a game-high 28 points.

The loss snapped a three game winning streak for the Utes. They moved to 14-11 overall and 8-5 in Pac-12 Conference play.

Next Up

Utah will next take on first place Washington on the road on Wednesday. The Utes previously received a 69-53 beating from the Huskies on Jan. 10. The rematch will tip off at 9 p.m. and be broadcast on FS1.
